Jazz Licks

Learning jazz licks is important for developing improvisational skills for a numbers of reasons: from language acquisition where jazz licks serve as a form of musical vocabulary, to ear training, technique development and fostering creativity. Jazz licks are typically crafted to navigate specific chord progressions. By learning them, one gains insights into how other musicians approach harmonic structures, helping one develop a deeper understanding of jazz harmony.

Bass Clef Material

Upon reviewing the published improvisation materials, a noticeable trend emerges — the majority of content is presented in the treble clef. This prevalence may be a direct reflection of the widespread use of certain musical instruments in jazz. However, this inadvertently contributes to a scenario where, for instance, bass guitar players find themselves somewhat overlooked, compelled to navigate musical material predominantly presented in the treble clef.

This shift can be less than ideal for bass and double bass players, introducing an unnecessary challenge as they grapple with a clef that may not align seamlessly with their instrument's natural range and nuances. This observation underscores the need for a more inclusive approach in music materials to ensure that all instrumentalists, including bassists, have access to content that is both relevant and conducive to their musical expression.

Content Quality

While the concept of compiling musical licks from renowned artists is not new, the limitations of print materials, both in terms of quality and quantity, hindered their effective utilization for building a comprehensive jazz vocabulary conducive to graceful improvisation. A significant shift occurred with the introduction of the internet, coupled with a project that amassed an extensive array of musical licks, made publicly available. While the project is commendable, the book elevates the content by refining it — carefully selecting the premier licks from the project and organizing them in a highly user-friendly manner.

great reading practice

I have been using this for sight reading practice on electric bass and its very helpful- its hard to read and changes keys every page. mostly 8th note horn like rhythms and a lot of arpeggios. so i do not know about other uses - but for practicing sight reading I recommend as part of a library of material to practice on daily.

A gem, fun to play in digestible bits

I play this on the piano, along with the treble clef version, to focus on each hand while also exploring jazz melodies. The rhythmic complexity of something like the Charlie Parker omnibook can be overwhelming, but this is perfect. Thank you so much for this work Bopland! A book version of the walking basslines on your website someday would be awesome.

Good book!!! Highly recommend!

Very good book, and very reasonably priced. There are almost three hundred pages of material here- licks based on progressions in popular jazz standards like, "All the Things You Are", "Autumn Leaves", "Days Of Wine And Roses" (and more); as well as ii V7 I. While written in bass clef, the licks are not "instrument specific"- meaning they are not made with a double bass, bass guitar or trombone in mind. They are good, musical sounding ideas that will be a welcome addition to many people's practice repertoire. The quality of the paper and the printing is good, but I would have preferred a spiral binding to the regular "book style" binding it has- the book doesn't like to lay flat on a music stand. Aside from that, it's a great value- highly recommend!

You know of the fretboard will great improve and also you ears

Bass guitar players should read and learn every lick in this book. You knowledge of the fretboard will greatly improve and also you ears. You will also hear these licks slowly showing up in your playing. Learn each lick thoroughly and then it's only after it is mastered that you should play it with a backing track.

A Must Have

This book has been life changing for me. A must have for serious players that are looking into expanding their jazz vocabulary, as well as a lot of sight reading material. By far one of the best books I've ever purchased. Whether you're a beginner, or a highly advanced player, this is extremely useful.

Amazing number of great jazz motifs.

This book contains an amazing number of examples of melodic jazz licks, based on common changes (e.g. 2-5-1) and common jazz standards. If you're working on improvising and want a treasure chest of examples to borrow or just learn from, buy this book. This book will keep me busy for a very long time. And don't be put off by the price. It's worth several times the current asking price. Check out the examples and consider that this goes on for almost 300 pages.

What is Hip?

I have at least a hundred hard-copy musician tutor books and at least the same again in electronic versions, stuff I've never, and I fear I'll NEVER make use of. However, this book is different. Somehow its simplicity and applicability make it the best music tutor I've ever tried. Thank you, Bopland, and thank you, Amazon.
